How Many Really Understand How Affiliate Marketing Works?

Hands up how many people really understand how this Affiliate Marketing thing works.

I’m not talking about knowing what to do, or the steps to take.

I’m not talking about the how, what, when or where. I’m talking about

the Why.

I’ve lost count of the people out there trying to teach others what to do, the steps to take. Seriously, I have literally lost count.

I’m sure you’ve seen them as well.

But I’ve noticed that none of them, not one**, actually explains why there method works. How it all fits together.

I have a few theories about why this is

1. They don’t know. They are just following the steps someone else told them to.
2. They can’t be bothered. There is far too much effort involved in actually having to explain and teach people why it all works…
3. They don’t want you to know. If you knew then you would work out that you don’t need all the crap they are trying to sell you.

The way affiliate marketing works is fairly simple. There are 3 basic steps. But you do need to understand why you need to take those steps, in the correct order for everything to work.

1. Find An Already Profitable Market

Most people do this the wrong way around. They find a product first, then try to find a market for that product. NO NO NO!!!

You do some research. You find an already profitable niche. A slice of a market where people are already spending money.

2. You Build A List

I was told this when I first started. I wasn’t told why. So I chose to ignore it. I didn’t know how to build a list, didn’t know why, I certainly didn’t know what to say to my list and it sounded much to hard and I’ll just go ahead ans slip this step…

Big Mistake

99% of what you make online will come from your list.

You can choose to ignore this (like I did). You would also earn no money online (like I was). Or at the most you may make a couple of bucks.

To build a list is not that difficult. You have a web site, a squeeze page or a blog. You insert an opt-in form (I like to use Aweber) and get people to enter their name and email address into this opt-in form.

How, I hear you ask.

You bribe them. You offer them something in exchange. A report, an e-Book, something of value, giving them information on whatever niche, or market you have chosen.

By giving you their name and email in exchange for this valuable information they have shown you that they are interested in that subject.

3. You Sell To Your List

It is much easier to sell related products to people who have already shown their interest in that subject than it is to try to sell to every one.

IMPORTANT

Before you try to sell products to you list, you must first Build A Relationship With Your List

This step is very, very important. Just because they got a free report or e-Book off you, doesn’t mean they are willing to start throwing money at you.

You need to show them you know what you are talking about. You need to show them that you care about their problems and want to help.

So many times I’ve joined someones list because they had information that sounded valuable (sometimes the information is just widely available information thrown together to make it sound like someone knew what they were talking about) and then I start receiving emails telling me how I must buy this new program, or that book, I will fail without this new soft-ware.

Build a Relationship with your list, then promote related products to your list.

When you subscribe to someones list, at the bottom of every email is a link to unsubscribe – I use that link when I start getting crappy emails trying to sell me a pile of crappy information/programs/software that I don’t need.

At this point I will also point out that there is a ton of great information/programs/software out there for sale. A great deal of what I know is from information that I have bought. You can only get so far for free.

**I mentioned about that no one actually explains the why. Why do you have to do these steps, in that order. That is not quite correct. There is someone who makes it his business to explain, not just how to do something, but why it works.
